Musicals Program Choreographer

Project Success is looking for two Choreographers – one for our annual musical at Northeast Middle School and one for our first musical at Andersen United Middle School. The production at Northeast Middle School is Frozen Jr. and the production at Andersen United Middle School is Shrek Jr. This is an independent contractor position.

Project Success produces musicals at four Minneapolis Public middle schools: Sanford, Northeast, Andersen United, and Anwatin. We cast 6th, 7th, and 8th grade in each show. Our students come from diverse backgrounds and have a variety of theatrical experiences. For many, the Project Success musical at their school is their first opportunity to be in a show! We utilize the power of theater to inspire, build community, act as a springboard for discussion, and encourage students to tell their own stories.

Core Job Responsibilities 

Choreography:

• Assist with running auditions and casting the show
• Create original dances/blocking for the show’s musical numbers
• Teach all choreographed numbers to the cast
• Foster students’ talents and confidence
• Create an inclusive and accessible environment at rehearsal

Communication:

• Work in close collaboration with the Director, Music Director, Assistant Director, Technical Director, and Senior Program Manager – Musicals
• Build and nurture trusting relationships with young people
• Interact with school partners and families
• This position reports to the Senior Program Manager – Musicals

Schedule

• Rehearsals after school, Monday through Friday, from 3:20 pm – 5:40 pm (3 days a week)
• Four tech rehearsals from 3:20 pm-6:40 pm
• Two performance dates including two school matinees and two evening performances
• Additional time commitment of 1-3 hours per week to plan actor blocking, create weekly rehearsal schedules, make production documents (e.g., mic lists, prop needs), and attend a production meeting the week before auditions. More details regarding scheduling are to be discussed during the interview process.

• Auditions: Dec 16^th and 17^th  
• Rehearsals: Tuesday, January 6^th – Thursday, March 6
• Tech rehearsals: Monday, March 3^rd – Thursday, March 6^th
• Performances: 3 on Friday, March 7^th and 1 on Saturday, March 8^th
  
  Andersen United Dates
• Auditions: January 13^th and 14^th
• Rehearsals: Monday, January 21^st – Thursday, March 20^th
• Tech rehearsals: Monday, March 17^th – Thursday, March 20^th
• Performances: 3 on Friday, March 21st and 1 on Saturday, March 22^nd

Position Details

• Independent contractor position
• $2,250 – $2,750 Stipend, commensurate with experience
• Must be able to pass a background check
