Two female scientists, living hundreds of years apart, explore the meaning of love, motherhood, family, art and science. Written by Karen Zacarías (The Book Club Play), Legacy of Light juxtaposes the true story of Émilie du Châtelet, a mathematician, scientist, and lover of the philosopher Voltaire, who became unexpectedly pregnant at 42, and that of a fictional 21st-century physicist desperately trying to conceive a child. Quirky humor, joyful intellectualism, a fascinating true story, and poignant fiction all collide in this beautifully surreal comedy that asks, “What is the science of love?”

Content Warnings/Age Recommendations

Contains sexual situations, staged combat, and adult themes. This performance is recommended for ages 14 and older.

Themes

  • In the play, a scientist wonders if “light and love share the same properties.” How might scientific discoveries show us something about human nature? How about vice versa?
  • Playwright Karen Zacarias says that emotions are consistent aspects of being human, no matter what time period we are in. This play tells stories spanning two very different time periods. Even if emotions are the same in each era, might there be differences in how those emotions are viewed and communicated? Why or why not?
